VW Crafter NOx Sensor Failure — Diagnosis & Repair

2019 VW Crafter 2.0 TDI 140 (Euro 6)· Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire

EML, AdBlue light, and an SCR efficiency code on a low-mileage Crafter. Standard fault — but the lessons in coding and adaptation reset are worth reading.

Reported symptoms

  • EML and AdBlue warning both on
  • Mild performance loss
  • Countdown not yet active
  • Vehicle on 38,000 miles — early sensor failure

Diagnostic process

  1. VCDS full scan, P229F active + P20EE pending
  2. Live data showed downstream NOx sensor heater current outside spec
  3. Upstream sensor reading correctly
  4. Confirmed SCR catalyst efficiency healthy once sensor data discounted

Findings

Premature failure of the downstream NOx sensor heater circuit — a known weak point on the 2.0 TDI Crafter. Catalyst and dosing system were both healthy.

Resolution

  1. Fitted OE-quality downstream NOx sensor
  2. Coded sensor to vehicle via VCDS
  3. Reset SCR adaptations and cleared codes
  4. Performed full road-test to confirm both sensors reporting in spec and warnings extinguished

Outcome

Single-visit fix, vehicle back on the road within four hours. Owner reported zero recurrence at next service interval. Lifetime warranty applied.

Case study FAQs

Downstream NOx sensor heater failures are a known weak point on the 2.0 TDI Crafter and many other Euro 6 diesels — particularly on vehicles doing lots of short, cold runs that cycle the heater frequently.
