VW Crafter AdBlue Problems — Diagnosed & Fixed

Van · 2.0 TDI (Euro 6) · EA288

The VW Crafter 2.0 TDI is a regular AdBlue job for us. NOx sensor failure, AdBlue dosing pump pressure faults and crystallisation cluster around the same mileage band.

Crafter drivers commonly see an amber AdBlue warning followed by a countdown. Repeat faults after a dealer sensor swap usually trace back to missing coding.

Common Crafter AdBlue warning messages

  • AdBlue: top up — engine restart in XX km
  • Emissions workshop — check engine
  • Engine warning — reduced power
  • AdBlue range too low

Symptoms Crafter drivers report

  • Amber AdBlue warning then countdown
  • Limp mode under hard acceleration
  • Repeat fault after sensor replacement (uncoded)
  • Pump cycling repeatedly at key-on

Common causes on the Crafter

Downstream NOx sensor failure

Sensor degrades, logs P229F / P20EE, triggers countdown.

AdBlue dosing pump pressure low

Pump wear means it can no longer hit target rail pressure (P20E8).

Crystallised injector

Urea deposits block the dosing injector and starve the SCR.

Sensor not coded after replacement

VAG ECU rejects uncoded NOx sensors — fault returns within drive cycles.

Our Crafter diagnostic process

  1. VAG-specific (ODIS / VCDS) multi-module scan
  2. Live NOx and SCR data
  3. AdBlue rail pressure target vs actual
  4. Pump current-draw and flow test
  5. SCR inlet inspection for crystallisation

Common Crafter repairs

  • OE-coded downstream NOx sensor replacement
  • AdBlue dosing pump replacement
  • Injector clean / replacement
  • Run adaptation and basic settings post-coding
  • Reset SCR adaptations and clear countdown via ODIS

VW Crafter AdBlue FAQs

Almost always because the sensor wasn't coded to the vehicle. VAG ECUs reject uncoded NOx sensors and the fault returns within a few drive cycles.
