VW Crafter AdBlue Pump Failure — Diagnosis, Repair and Coding
Why the Crafter AdBlue pump fails, the code that confirms it, and how the repair is done properly.
The Volkswagen Crafter is one of the most capable large vans on the road, but its AdBlue pump is a recognised weak point past 80,000 miles. P20E8 is the code, low dosing pressure is the symptom, and a proper pump replacement with coding is the only lasting fix. Cheap aftermarket pumps and clear-the-code approaches do not last on this van.
Symptoms
- AdBlue warning with restart countdown
- Limp mode when laden
- Engine management light alongside the AdBlue light
- Warning returns within days of a non-specialist 'fix'
- Difficult starts in cold weather
Common fault codes
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| P20E8 | Reductant pressure too low — the classic Crafter pump fault |
| P204F | Reductant system performance |
| P207F | Reductant quality — sometimes triggered by repeated low-pressure events |
What actually causes it
AdBlue pump wear (the primary cause)
The internal pump diaphragm and seals wear with mileage and AdBlue exposure. Pressure drops below target, dosing accuracy fails, and the system logs P20E8.
Crystallised dosing line or injector
Often goes hand-in-hand with pump wear. We always inspect the dosing line and injector when replacing a pump.
Contaminated AdBlue tank
Cheap fluid or contamination from an open container can damage the pump and trigger quality faults. Tank drain and flush is sometimes required.
How we diagnose it
- VAG-specific multi-module scan
- Live dosing pressure check against target — P20E8 with low pressure on a full tank confirms the pump
- Visual inspection of dosing line, injector and tank for contamination
- NOx sensor signal check to rule out a secondary fault
The repair, done properly
- OE or OE-equivalent pump replacement
- Tank flush if contamination is found
- Coding, adaptation and system prime via VAG diagnostic platform
- Road test and post-repair scan to confirm pressure, dosing and NOx are all within spec
Cost guide
Crafter AdBlue pump replacement is one of the larger AdBlue jobs in terms of labour but is still substantially less at us than at a main dealer. Fixed-price quote after diagnostics.
How to prevent it next time
- Only ever use ISO 22241 AdBlue from a sealed container
- Keep the tank above 1/4 — running it dry repeatedly damages the pump
- On fleet vans, get an AdBlue health check at every other service — much cheaper than an off-the-road lockout
