Vauxhall Vivaro AdBlue Problems — Warning, NOx & Countdown Fix
Vivaro AdBlue faults — covering both the Renault-platform and the newer PSA Vivaro — and how we fix them.
There are two distinct Vauxhall Vivaros on UK roads: the older Renault-platform van (sharing AdBlue parts with the Trafic) and the newer PSA-platform van (sharing with the Peugeot Expert and Citroen Dispatch). Both suffer the same kinds of AdBlue faults — NOx sensors, dosing injectors and SCR contamination — but the diagnostic kit and coding procedure differ. We cover both properly.
Symptoms
- 'AdBlue — starting prevented in X miles' message
- Orange AdBlue warning that will not clear after a top-up
- Limp mode under load on the 1.5 / 2.0 BlueHDi or dCi
- Engine warning light combined with AdBlue warning
- No-start once the countdown reaches zero

What actually causes it
NOx sensor failure
The most common Vivaro AdBlue fault on both platforms. Replacement plus coding is the standard fix.
Dosing injector crystallisation
Urea deposits block dosing. Common on multi-drop urban Vivaros.
SCR catalyst contamination
Wrong-grade AdBlue poisons the SCR brick and logs P20EE.
Pump pressure loss
Higher-mileage Vivaros lose in-tank pump pressure, triggering reductant pressure faults.
How we diagnose it
- Correct manufacturer-level scan tool for the platform (Renault CLIP or PSA Diagbox)
- Live data: NOx signal, AdBlue pressure, dosing duty cycle, SCR temperature
- Confirm the exact failing part before any quote
The repair, done properly
- OE-spec sensor, injector or pump replacement
- Coding and adaptation to the correct platform
- SCR adaptation reset and verified road test
- AdBlue countdown cleared through diagnostics once the fault is repaired
How to prevent it next time
- Only ISO 22241 AdBlue from a sealed container
- Top up before the warning appears
- Sustained 30-minute motorway runs monthly for urban vans
- Diagnose at the first warning, not at countdown
