The Toyota Proace and Proace City are built on the Stellantis (PSA) platform and share their AdBlue system with the Peugeot Expert / Partner and Citroen Dispatch / Berlingo. That means the same NOx sensor, dosing injector and SCR fault patterns — and the same fix. Most Proace AdBlue countdowns are a single sensor or dosing repair, not a write-off.
Symptoms
- Orange AdBlue warning that will not clear after a top-up
- 'Starting impossible in X miles' countdown message
- Loss of power / limp mode on the 1.5 BlueHDi or 2.0 D-4D
- Engine warning light combined with AdBlue warning
- No-start condition after countdown reaches zero

What actually causes it
Downstream NOx sensor failure
The most common Proace AdBlue fault. Sensor must be replaced and coded — generic OBD scanners will not complete the reset.
AdBlue dosing injector crystallisation
Urea deposits block dosing. Common on Proace vans used for short multi-drop deliveries.
SCR catalyst contamination
Supermarket / non-ISO 22241 AdBlue ruins the SCR brick on the PSA platform and triggers P20EE.
How we diagnose it
- Manufacturer-level scan of engine, BSI and SCR systems
- Live data: NOx signal, AdBlue pressure, dosing duty cycle
- Confirm which sensor or component is actually failing before any parts are ordered
The repair, done properly
- OE-spec sensor, injector or pump replacement
- Telecoding to the BSI / engine ECU
- SCR adaptation reset and road test
- AdBlue countdown cleared through diagnostics
How to prevent it next time
- Always ISO 22241 AdBlue from a sealed container
- Top up before the orange light appears
- Take the Proace for a sustained 30-minute drive monthly if it does short urban work
- Diagnose at the first warning, not at countdown
