Renault Trafic AdBlue Warning, Countdown & No-Start — Specialist Fix
Renault Trafic AdBlue faults are common on the Blue dCi van — here is how we diagnose and fix them properly.
The Renault Trafic Blue dCi shares most of its AdBlue hardware with the Vauxhall Vivaro and the Nissan NV300. The same NOx sensor, dosing injector and pump faults appear across all three brands. Once the dashboard shows 'starting prevented', the countdown is already running — we diagnose, repair and reset it properly.
Symptoms
- 'AdBlue — starting prevented in X miles' on the dashboard
- Orange AdBlue warning stays on after a top-up
- Limp mode under load
- Engine warning light alongside AdBlue warning
- Random no-start in cold mornings
Common fault codes
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| P229F | NOx sensor 2 performance |
| P204F | Reductant system performance |
| P20E8 | Reductant pressure too low |
| P20EE | SCR efficiency below threshold |
What actually causes it
NOx sensor failure
The downstream NOx sensor is the most common Trafic AdBlue fault. Replacement must include coding.
AdBlue dosing injector crystallisation
Urea blocks the dosing tip. Common on multi-drop urban Trafics.
Pump / pressure line fault
Higher-mileage Trafics lose in-tank pump pressure. P20E8 with low live-data pressure confirms it.
How we diagnose it
- Renault-level (CLIP) scan of engine, SCR and BCM
- Live data: NOx signal, AdBlue pressure, dosing duty cycle, SCR temperature
- Confirm the exact failing component before any parts are ordered
The repair, done properly
- OE-spec sensor, injector or pump replacement
- Coding and adaptation to the vehicle
- SCR adaptation reset and verified road test
- AdBlue countdown cleared once the fault is repaired
How to prevent it next time
- Only ISO 22241 AdBlue from a sealed container
- Top up before the warning appears
- Don't ignore the first orange warning
- Service the van on schedule — DPF and SCR work together
