Range Rover AdBlue Problems — Diesel Warning, NOx & No-Start Fix
Range Rover AdBlue faults are common across SDV6, SDV8 and Ingenium diesels. Here is how we diagnose and fix them properly.
Range Rover diesels — Full Size, Sport, Velar and Evoque — all rely on a sensitive SCR / AdBlue system. The most common faults we see are NOx sensor failures, dosing module crystallisation and AdBlue pump issues on higher-mileage SDV6 and SDV8 cars. Once the countdown starts, every key cycle counts down — so quick diagnosis matters.
Symptoms
- 'No engine restart possible in X miles' message
- Yellow / orange AdBlue warning that will not clear after a top-up
- Glow plug or engine light alongside AdBlue warning
- Limp mode under load — especially on the SDV6
- Random no-start after sitting overnight
Common fault codes
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| P229F | NOx sensor 2 performance |
| P204F | Reductant system performance |
| P20E8 | Reductant pressure too low |
| P207F | Reductant quality |
What actually causes it
NOx sensor failure
The most common Range Rover AdBlue fault. Sensor replacement must be paired with proper coding — a swap alone will not clear the countdown.
AdBlue dosing module / injector
Crystallised urea blocks the dosing injector. Pressure looks fine, but dosing accuracy drops below tolerance.
AdBlue pump / pressure line
Higher-mileage SDV6 and SDV8 Range Rovers lose in-tank pump pressure. P20E8 with low live-data pressure is the giveaway.
Software / SCR adaptation lost
After a battery disconnect or a poor dealer update, SCR adaptation values can drift. Often misdiagnosed as a sensor fault.
How we diagnose it
- Manufacturer-level (Pathfinder / JLR) scan of engine, SCR and instrument cluster
- Live data: pump pressure, NOx upstream/downstream, SCR temperature, dosing duty cycle
- Confirm the exact failing part before any work is quoted
The repair, done properly
- OE-spec replacement of failing NOx sensor, dosing module or pump
- Coding and adaptation to the vehicle
- SCR adaptation reset and confirmed road test
- Countdown cleared through the diagnostic system once the fault is repaired
Cost guide
Range Rover AdBlue work is typically half or less of main-dealer pricing for the same OE parts. We give a fixed quote after the diagnostic.
How to prevent it next time
- Only use ISO 22241 AdBlue — Range Rover SCR systems are very sensitive to contamination
- Top up before the warning appears, ideally above 1/4 tank
- Don't let a low-mileage Range Rover sit unused for weeks — it stresses the SCR
- Diagnose at the first warning, not at countdown
