Range Rover Sport AdBlue Problems — Diagnosed & Fixed

SUV · 3.0 SDV6 (L494) · 4.4 SDV8 (L494) · 3.0 D300 Ingenium I6 (L461)

The L494 Sport SDV6 is the heavy hitter on our ramp for Land Rover AdBlue work — high mileages, tow-heavy duty cycles, and a dosing pump that wears characteristically around 70k. The SDV8 sees similar work; the L461 D300 is newer territory but the Pathfinder coding rule is the same.

Sport owners see 'Diesel Exhaust Fluid System Fault' or restart messages — the dealer quotes £1,500–£2,500 and we deliver the same OE-coded repair for a fraction.

Common Sport AdBlue warning messages

  • Refill AdBlue (XX miles to no restart)
  • Diesel Exhaust Fluid System Fault
  • Restricted Performance
  • Check engine — emissions

Symptoms Sport drivers report

  • Tow-heavy duty cycle accelerating sensor drift
  • Dosing pump audible cycling at key-on
  • Repeat fault after a JLR clear-and-go
  • Reduced power on hills under load

Common causes on the Sport

Downstream NOx sensor failure

Most common Sport fault — sensor ages around 60–90k, P229F logged.

AdBlue dosing pump wear (SDV6 / SDV8)

Pump can no longer hit target rail pressure on higher-mileage Sports — P20E8 / P204F.

Crystallisation at injector

High EGT under tow causes urea deposits at the dosing injector.

Uncoded sensor re-fault

Pathfinder coding mandatory; we see uncoded re-faults weekly.

Our Sport diagnostic process

  1. JLR Pathfinder multi-module scan
  2. Live NOx + SCR temperature data
  3. AdBlue rail pressure check warm idle + dynamic
  4. Pump current draw test
  5. SCR inlet visual

Common Sport repairs

  • OE-coded downstream NOx sensor with Pathfinder coding
  • AdBlue dosing pump replacement where indicated
  • Injector clean / replacement
  • SCR adaptation reset + restart countdown cleared legally

Range Rover Sport AdBlue FAQs

On higher-mileage SDV6 / SDV8 Sports the AdBlue dosing pump diaphragm wears and can no longer maintain target rail pressure — P20E8 / P204F logged. Replacing the pump with an OE assembly resolves it.
