Audi A6 AdBlue Problems — Diagnosed & Fixed

Car · 3.0 TDI V6 (C7 / C8) · 2.0 TDI EA288 (C8 40 TDI)

The C7 and C8 A6 3.0 TDI is a daily AdBlue job for us — both pre and post-DieselGate cars. The countdown reads 'No engine start in 900 miles' on MMI and only an ODIS-coded sensor fix actually clears it for good.

A6 owners typically arrive after a clear-and-go from an indie garage; the warning returns within a fortnight. The fix is a coded OE sensor and full SCR adaptation reset.

Common A6 AdBlue warning messages

  • Refill AdBlue — no engine start in 900 miles
  • Emissions workshop! Engine system fault
  • Reduced engine power

Symptoms A6 drivers report

  • MMI countdown despite recent dealer 'reset'
  • Repeat fault from uncoded sensor swap
  • Reduced power on C8 40 TDI under boost
  • Higher than expected AdBlue usage

Common causes on the A6

Downstream NOx sensor failure (C7 / C8)

Dominant A6 fault — sensor degrades around 70–100k, P229F logged.

Upstream NOx sensor (3.0 TDI V6)

Less common but appears on higher-mileage V6 cars; P2200 logged.

Component protection not active

An OE sensor fitted without ODIS coding will re-fault — we see this weekly.

SCR efficiency drift

Updated post-DieselGate map runs tighter thresholds, exposing marginal SCR sooner.

Our A6 diagnostic process

  1. ODIS multi-module scan
  2. Live NOx data pre / post SCR
  3. Component-protection / coding verification
  4. SCR adaptation history

Common A6 repairs

  • OE-coded NOx sensor with full ODIS component protection
  • SCR adaptation reset + drive verification
  • MMI countdown cleared legally

Audi A6 AdBlue FAQs

Almost certainly because the sensor wasn't coded with ODIS. Audi requires component protection on safety / emissions components; a non-coded sensor is rejected by the ECU and the warning returns. Coding is included in our repair.
