Ford Transit AdBlue Countdown — Diagnosis & Permanent Fix

2019 Ford Transit 2.0 EcoBlue 130 (Euro 6)· Reading, Berkshire

A panel-van fleet operator brought us a Transit with a 250-mile AdBlue countdown after two failed dealer 'resets'. Here is the full diagnostic path and the permanent fix.

Reported symptoms

  • Amber 'AdBlue — Engine will not restart in 250 mi' message
  • Reduced power above 2,000 rpm
  • Warning returned within 60 miles of a dealer reset (twice)
  • AdBlue level reading correct on dash

Diagnostic process

  1. Connected Ford IDS, pulled live data from upstream + downstream NOx sensors
  2. Confirmed downstream NOx sensor signal drifting outside spec at idle
  3. Pressure-tested dosing line — pressure held within range
  4. Inspected dosing injector — no visible crystallisation
  5. Cross-checked SCR efficiency adaptation values — outside Ford limits

Findings

The downstream (post-SCR) NOx sensor was the root cause. The previous dealer visits had only cleared codes without addressing the failing sensor, so the ECU re-triggered P20EE / P229F within one drive cycle and restarted the countdown — each time with fewer miles allowed.

Resolution

  1. Replaced downstream NOx sensor with OE-coded part
  2. Coded new sensor to vehicle via IDS
  3. Reset SCR adaptation values and dosing learn
  4. Cleared stored codes and ran 20-minute road-load test to confirm sensor reporting in spec
  5. Verified countdown permanently removed and warning extinguished

Outcome

Van returned to fleet the same day. Owner reported zero recurrence and no warnings at the following service. Backed by our lifetime warranty on the work.

Case study FAQs

Clearing P20EE / P229F without replacing the failing downstream NOx sensor only buys you one or two drive cycles. The ECU re-evaluates SCR efficiency on every cold start, logs the same code, and restarts the countdown — usually with fewer miles allowed than last time.
